The Chicory Challenge is supporting BDF Newlife, the UK’s leading child health and research charity.
All the recipes entered in the Chicory Challenge will be published in a recipe book to be sold in aid of the charity. A representative of BDF Newlife will be on the judging panel of the competition.
As many as 1 in 16 babies have an inborn condition (birth defect). That could be 124 babies born every day with some kind of inborn condition, in the UK alone.
Inborn conditions are syndromes, diseases and malformations. Some are minor, others are debilitating and/or life-threatening. They can cause distress and heartache, affecting ability, physical and mental development, senses, organs, limbs and life span. Some are noticed at birth; others will be noticed later
BDF Newlife was founded in 1991 as the Birth Defects Foundation, by parents, doctors and business people dedicated to fighting what is now the biggest threat to child health. The charity is known for its commitment, integrity, passion, creativity and compassion.
Through research, support and action BDF Newlife aims to improve the lives of those affected and to reduce the chances of our children and our children’s children being affected.
BDF Newlife funds vital medical research to understand, prevent, combat and treat inborn conditions. Its nurse service comforts, informs and supports families and those at risk. It gives direct grants to affected families, funding vital equipment and assistance.
BDF Newlife also campaigns to raise the level of awareness helping people to act, prior to pregnancy, to reduce the risks.
This is why the Chicory Challenge has chosen to support BDF NEwlife. Chicory is an excellent source of folate (folic acid), a B vitamin needed for cell replication and growth which is a key nutritional requirement during pregnancy. Chicory is also a good source of calcium and vitamin K, which are required for healthy bone and dental development in children.
